Continue on FNORD tour The struggle between science and denial is an old one. Darwin’s theories threatened an already obsolescent “ideological state apparatus,” the church, and were attacked viciously. Rachel Carson: “…I ask you to recall the uproar that followed Charles Darwin’s announcement of his theories of evolution. The concept of man’s origin from pre-existing forms was hotly and emotionally denied, and the denials came not only from the lay public, but from Darwin’s peers in science. Only after many years did the concepts set forth in The Origin of Species become firmly established. Today, it would be hard to find any person of education who would deny the facts of evolution [Ms. Carson made these comments in 1963; since then, a frighteningly large number of relatively literate “creationists” have tried to reverse history –DM]

Yet so many of us deny the obvious corollary; that man is affected by the same environmental influences that control the lives of all the many thousands of other species to which he is related by evolutionary ties (Lost Woods: The Discovered Writings of Rachel Carson, pp. 244-45)

Whether viewed from a strictly material perspective, or from a more psychologically and spiritually oriented stance, denial allows continued functioning in the face of loss, grief and horror. The addictions of the powerful might be likened to a cocaine addict pushing the concentration of cocaine in his blood closer to a lethal level with each injection or inhaled hit of crack. The addictions of those who serve the powerful, from the highest among the bourgeoisie to the lowest of prisoners and slaves to day to day comfort and the illusion of stability feed the control-addictions of the ruling class (“Global Elite, “New World Order Conspiracy” etc…).
Of course, to control those not entirely dominated by this addictive process, the addiction of society to violence is translated into the threat, and actual application of pure brute force, up to and including capital punishment.
